Sutton REALTOR® Elected FIABCI President 2009 – Canadian Chapter
Toronto, ON – Toronto, ON – Carlos Sousa, a REALTOR® with Sutton Group –Associates Realty Inc.*, has been elected the 2009 President of the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) for Canada. The organization is highly regarded with chapters in over 60 countries and more than 33,000 members. Sousa has been involved with the organization since 2005 as Director of the Legislation and Environmental Committee. He says that these opportunities with the FIABCI have allowed him “to blend his work with his interests.”
One of Sousa’s main objectives during his term he reveals “is to promote Canada as a reception centre for foreign investment.” To accomplish this, he is playing a major role in campaigning to bring the FIABCI World Congress to Vancouver. The timing of this event would be impeccable as it would immediately follow the 2010 Winter Olympics. The meetings would bring over 1000 delegates to the city and provide a forum for endorsing Canada. His second objective as President, he explains, “is to increase our (Canada) working
relations with China and Latin America.” Carlos believes we, here in Canada, have the resources that China and Latin America require to serve their large populations, including construction materials, architects, and many renewable energy products.
Sousa also plans to use his Presidency to provide an arena for discussing important environmental issues. He will encourage fellow REALTORS® to promote using products that save energy to homeowners. “As REALTORS® selling properties we have a high degree of responsibility in urban development and its sustainability,” says Sousa.
Along with his dedication to the FIABCI, he is also active in his local community. Sousa is a member of the Toronto Real Estate Board’s Green Task Force. Additionally, he is a member of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies at the University of Toronto. This summer, Sousa will travel to Portugal, to an archaeological site, where he will provide expertise on housing as part of his research on housing in the Roman cities of the Iberia Peninsula.
